Mohanthal is one of the famous dessert recipes of Indian Gujarati communities. It’s very popular as a traditional dessert in West Indian states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Its name Mohanthal, is came from the Hindu god Shree Krishna (Mohan another Lord Krishna's name). Mohanthal is well known as lord Krishna’s favourite sweets. Hindu specially makes this dessert in Janmashtami and Diwali festivals. In Lord Shree Krishna’s temple, priest takes Krishna’s pleasures (bhog, prasad) with this sweet.

Ingredients for making Mohanthal:-

  • 2 cups thick and grainy gram flour (Besan)
  • 2 cups desi ghee (clarified butter)
  • 2 tablespoon milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry ginger powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon green cardamom(Elanchi) powder
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg powder (optional)
  • cashew, almond or pistachio flakes for garnishing.

Procedure for making Mohanthal

  1. Take 2 cups of thick and grainy gram flour (chickpea flour/besan) in a big bowl. In this bowl, put 2 teaspoon of milk, 4-5 tablespoon Desi Ghee (clarified butter), ginger powder, nutmeg powder and rub very well (about 5-6 mins).
  2. After rubbing this mixture, keep aside for 20-25 minutes.

  3. Preparation for making single thread Sugar syrup (1 tar wali chasni)

    1. Mix 1 cup of sugar and water in a sauce pan. Boil it on the medium heat.
    2. Keep stirring with a spoon and remove any scum formed on the surface by a spoon.
    3. Check time to time, till you get single thread consistency. To do this take out the spoon. Touch your thumb and forefinger together and pull apart gently. A single thread is formed and does not break.



  4. On the medium flame, put rest of all ghee in the pan. After melting ghee, fry gram-flour till oil and gram-flour take separating position. Its take your almost 25-35mins time.
  5. Add single thread sugar syrup, cardamom powder and take out from flame. Mixing all well, until temperature is cool down (5-10mins).
  6. Add all dry fruits and pour in plate.
  7. Cut in the barfi style and serve.
